The
Zelkova 'Green Vase' is a good choice for a shade
tree in the southern landscape. In 10 years, its
vase shape will reach 45 feet high and 25 feet
wide; more mature specimens will be larger. The
upright habit of this tree makes it perfect for
planting near the street driveways, or as a shade
tree near decks, patios and porches.
Zelkovas
were first planted as a replacement for the American
elm, which was beset with disease. 'Green Vase'
has the zelkova's typically serrated leaves, which
are a fresh green in spring and turn gold in fall.
One
interesting note about zelkovas: Their branches
leaf out at different times. That causes some
gardeners to think that some branches have died,
but be patient - all the leaves will appear.
