The
loblolly pine as a native evergreen tree of the
southeastern United States. A fast grower, it
is good for using as a privacy screen or to re-establish
woodlands. No need to mulch under these trees
as they drop needles twice a year to form a carpet
underneath.
The
name loblolly means a low wet place, but these
trees are not limited to that specific habitat.
They grow equally as well in dry soils. Because
they grow quite tall, we plant them as a privacy
screen or background setting for a property.
The
famous "Eisenhower Tree" on the 17th
hole of Augusta National Golf Club is a loblolly
pine. President Dwight D. Eisenhower, an Augusta
National member, hit the tree so many times that,
at a 1956 club meeting, he proposed that it be
cut down. Not wanting to offend the President,
the club's chairman, Clifford Roberts, immediately
adjourned the meeting rather than reject the request
outright. |
