Mondo
Grass is a good sod-forming ground cover, to 9in.
high. The foliage is very dark blue-green. Pretty,
lilac flower spikes are produced in summer. In
Zone 8 we always plant
Mondo Grass in the shade, or afternoon shade,
as it tends to discolor in full sun.
We
use Mondo Grass under the canopy of trees where
it's difficult to grow lawn grasses. You can mow
it once a year in late winter, before new growth
begins, to remove any foliage that might have
been damaged by cold.
Dwarf
Mondo Grass is similar but only 3in. high with
no flowers or berries. A great selection for groundcover
between stepping stones and an excellent selection
for underplanting laceleaf japanese maples. Grows
well in shade. Sun will scorch it. On rare occasion
we use Dwarf Mondo as a lawn substitute where
it's difficult to grow lawn grasses.
